A family-friendly future is taking shape in Carberry, where a grassroots effort is turning a splash park dream into a reality, one fundraiser at a time.
Karra Burney, Carberry’s Economic Development Officer, says the idea for the splash park grew out of a community survey issued a few years ago, asking residents what they’d like to see in the town’s future to help drive growth and attract new families.
"One of the top things was that there wasn't too much available for our young kids in town. So, parents and family members suggested a splash park," Burney says.
From there, a volunteer committee was formed and quickly got to work. Backed by a small but committed group, the project began building momentum.
"A committee was formed, and they took off running. They have a great committee with a few strong people spearheading these events and the fundraising. They're still a few years from building, but they're determined!"

Big event on the horizon
The committee’s biggest annual fundraiser, Hoedown with Hicktown, is set for June 7. This year’s event features Saskatchewan-based comedian Quick Dick McDick and a meal catered by Melanie Green.
"That's a big event, and you can buy tickets to the supper, the comedian show, the social, or the whole thing. They've got different levels of support and donations."
Other recent fundraisers include flower and meat orders as well as ongoing 50/50 draws. The current draw wraps up at the hoedown, with the winner receiving 50 per cent of total ticket sales, up to $5,000. Tickets are available at rafflebox.ca.
More family services coming
Alongside the splash park, a new daycare is also in the works which is part of a larger effort to make the town more welcoming to young families.
"It's part of our new economic development happening in town. We're trying to bring more people in, and having activities for our youth is important to us."
