Portage la Prairie is set to celebrate Bike Week from May 24 to 30 with a full week of activities aimed at encouraging community members of all ages to get active and explore the city on two wheels.

"This is something we do every year, and we're always excited to add new events and expand the fun," said Mitch Tilk, Program Coordinator for the Portage Community Revitalization Corporation (PCRC). "There's really something for everyone."

The week kicks off with the 'Gravel Grumble' on May 24, a challenging 20-30 km ride starting at Snow Valley. Riders can register by texting Blair at 204-856-9352. The following day features a more family-friendly event with a scavenger hunt and hot dog lunch at Island Park, supported by Sobeys and Central Plains Cancer Care.

Highlights include the 'Haunting Spaces Historical Ride' on May 27, a spooky tour of local sites, and the popular 'Cookie Ride' on May 28, where riders collect cookies from multiple schools. Early risers can join the 'Sunrise Ride' on May 29 at 5:40 a.m., followed by the 'Bike to Work Challenge'. Students are encouraged to participate in the 'Bike to School Challenge' on the last day of Bike week.

The PCRC is also hosting a newcomer photo challenge throughout the week.

"We're asking newcomers to capture their favourite spots in the community and submit them with a caption," Tilk explained. "We hope to showcase these in a future gallery display."

Safety remains a priority. "We're reminding everyone to wear helmets and be aware of traffic, especially with the new bike lanes and roundabouts," Tilk said.
