With temperatures picking up across the province, Classic 107 is matching the heat with our Album of the Month for May: Denis Plante and Stéphane Tétreault’s Stradivatango. The project pairs two exceptional players on two unique instruments: one, a Stradivarius cello; the other, a bandoneon. Together, Plante and Tétreault set out to explore the rich history of Argentinian tango music, as well as sharing original compositions that respond to a musical tradition that stretches back decades.

“Tango demands delicate balance,” says Plante in the liner notes. “The unique embrace of this sensual dance requires total trust between both partners at every step: in a heartbeat, the dancers are suspended between the past and the present, intoxicated by vertigo and grace.”

Plante could not have chosen a better dance partner than Tétreault, whose career has been on a meteoric rise with accolades such as the Canada Council for the Arts’ Virginia Parker Prize and the Prix Opus from the Conseil québécois de la musique lining the way. “Stéphane’s virtuosic interpretations bring to life new music where every note resonates with echoes of the past,” says Plante, noting that the 18th century Stradivarius he plays adds a new element depth to the music by composers like Astor Piazzolla, Carlos Gardel, and Angel Villoldo

Classic 107 listeners can hear an excerpt from Stradivatango every Wednesday morning on Morning Light with Nolan Kehler just after 7:30 a.m. throughout the month of May.
