A Community Cause Close to Home

Don Hales, owner of Don's Direct Deals, is turning up the heat on cancer this summer with a heartfelt community initiative. Beginning Friday, June 6, Hales will host a series of fundraising barbecues dubbed "Fight Cancer Fridays" at his business, located at 920 Saskatchewan Avenue East in Portage la Prairie.

The events are open to everyone and will feature hot dogs, chips and a drink, all available by donation. Every dollar raised will go directly to Central Plains Cancer Services (CPCS), an organization that has recently played a vital role in Hales' own life.

"My Way of Giving Back"

"This is just my way of giving back," says Hales. Earlier this year, he received a cancer diagnosis that brought him face to face with the disease. While the journey has been challenging, it also opened his eyes to the essential work CPCS does in the community.

"I always knew how important they were, but when it became personal, it really resonated," he explains. "They were there for me in ways I didn’t expect, and they’re doing that for so many others, young and old alike."

Support That Hits Home

CPCS offers critical services like transportation for patients undergoing treatment – something Hales says makes a world of difference. "The drivers who volunteer their time to get people to their appointments, that’s just one example of the amazing support they provide."

Inspired by the care he received, Hales felt moved to do something in return. "It’s not about me," he adds. "It’s about everyone who’s going through this, and raising awareness of the support that’s out there."

A Gathering for a Greater Good

More than just a fundraiser, Fight Cancer Fridays aim to bring people together. "Come have a bite, meet your neighbours, and support a cause that touches all of us," Hales says.

With more events planned throughout the summer, there will be plenty of opportunities for the community to pitch in – whether by donating, attending, or even volunteering.

Everyone Has a Role to Play

"Cancer doesn’t discriminate," Hales says. "It affects everyone. Seeing young children go through it is especially heartbreaking. That’s why this matters so much."

Whether you’ve been directly impacted by cancer or simply want to support those who have, Fight Cancer Fridays offer a way to make a difference, one hot dog at a time.
