Anglers from across the region will be making their way to Mainprize Regional Park this weekend for one of the Weyburn Wildlife Federation’s most anticipated events of the year — the 2025 Walleye Classic.
The annual fishing tournament is set for Saturday, June 7, with lines in the water from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Teams of two or three can register for the competition, with a registration fee of $200 per team. However, for teams choosing to include a third member, that angler must be 15 years of age or younger.
Troy Kincaid with the Weyburn Wildlife Federation said registration and rules night will take place Friday evening at 7 p.m. at Peterson Place, located within Mainprize Regional Park. “Hopefully we got some good weather and have some good turnouts for teams. We are getting quite a few entries in,” Kincaid said.
This year’s prize pool will see 67 percent of the total entry fees returned to the top four teams as cash prizes. An optional side pot is also available for teams who want an extra shot at winning — for an additional $25, teams can enter a winner-takes-all pool.
As for ensuring fair play? “Absolutely,” Kincaid confirmed when asked if tournament organizers would be checking for any rule violations, including tampering with the fish weights.
