The Winkler Family Resource Centre’s annual Teddy Bear Picnic made its way indoors this past weekend, having moved to the Winkler Curling Club to avoid inclement weather. However, the party was all the same for kids and families attending the picnic.

Monica Dueck, executive director of the Winkler Family Resource Centre, shared that the picnic is core to the function of the centre: “...fundraisers are our lifeblood, this is our biggest fundraiser of the year” she said. “All our programs that we offer are free”.

Stuffed animals seeking medical attention were offered the services of local doctors, chiropractors, orthodontists, dentists, and speech therapists at the picnic. Serving as an opportunity for kids to understand common medical procedures, these medical professionals then “treat” the stuffed animals.

“They see what their stuffed animal, what their teddy bear goes through, and then hopefully when they themselves have to go... to a medical professional, they’ll feel a little more comfortable.” Dueck shared. However, care went beyond physical health- also present at the picnic were local organizations teaching kids and families about all-around wellness.

Hailey Wiebe's kids were looking forward to bringing their stuffed animals to the picnic on Saturday.

For Hailey Wiebe, the picnic is a great time to connect with others. “It’s awesome for the families to come” Wiebe shared. “They have an opportunity to just interact and see the different things around.” Her daughters loved the picnic too— “They were so excited to bring their teddy bears”.
