Freedom International School is preparing to host a special event

This week, the school, a registered charity serving newcomer and former refugee youth ages 12-21, providing specialized, trauma-informed, accredited high school education in a Christ-centred environment, will host a mixed media art exhibit called "This is My Story."

"I've been so honoured to hear their stories as we explore it," said Cyndi Wiebe, director of communications with Freedom International School. "The amount that we're going to be able to show at the art show is just a small piece of their story."

Inspired by Segun Olude’s book, Itan Ati Asa: Yorùbá Narrative in Words and Images, this project highlights the importance of preserving heritage through storytelling, writing, food, and creative arts.

"In his book, he says if we stop speaking our languages, we are in danger of losing history and stories and the knowledge that they hold," said Wiebe. "As I read that and was thinking about our students and all the stories they have and the things that are in danger of being lost. Some students say they are even worried about learning English because they're worried that they'll lose those things that are part of their heritage, so the exploration of this project is just to bring it all out and explore it in different ways and different art styles."

Nyaboth says she is looking forward to showcasing her work.

"I'm happy for people to hear my story, how I got here and why I'm here."

Stephanie, another student at Freedom International School, says her favourite part about this project was the entire thing.

"I enjoyed the write-up because I get to express myself and share my story."

"This is My Story" will be on display on June 12 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Mission Baptist Church at 771 Sargent Avenue.
