Summer in Morden is shaping up to be jam-packed with fun, fitness, and fresh air, thanks to a full slate of programs from Morden Recreation. From lakeside paddle boarding to kids’ science camps, local residents of all ages have endless ways to stay active and connected this season.
“We do a lot because there’s a real community need for recreation, programming, and events,” says Brookelynn Wolfe, Recreation Programmer for the City of Morden.
And she’s not kidding—Morden’s summer offerings span a wide variety of interests and abilities. Whether you’re looking to cool off on the water, keep the kids busy, or find new ways to stay active, there’s something waiting for you at morden.ca/recreation.
Hit the water at Paddlefest
One of the season’s first big FREE events is Paddlefest, happening Saturday, June 14th from 10 AM to 2 PM at Lake Minnewasta.
“It’s free to try a canoe, kayak, stand-up paddleboard, and even dragon boats,” Wolfe explains. “There’s a gate fee to access the lake, but everything else is free.”
Wolfe herself recommends trying kayaking. “You’re not in a big boat with nine other people,” she laughs. “It’s peaceful out there.”
No registration is required and it's free, but pre-registering at morden.ca/recreation is encouraged to guarantee your spot.
Week-Long Kids Camps with Something for Everyone
If you're a parent wondering what to do when school’s out, Morden’s Kids Summer Day Camps are a life-saver. These week-long camps run all summer long and offer a rotating theme each week.
“This year we have themes like Art, Survivor Challenge, Nature, Sports, Science, and Exploring the Animal World,” says Wolfe. “It’s only about $32 a day, and it gives kids a chance to learn and have fun while parents are working.”
Spots fill up quickly, so early registration is recommended.
Stand-up paddleboard yoga: Balance on the lake
New to Morden this year is a truly unique offering: Stand-Up Paddleboard Yoga. Yes, it’s exactly what it sounds like.
“You’re doing yoga on a paddleboard, out on the lake,” says Wolfe. “If you fall in, you fall in—but that’s part of the fun!”
This challenging and refreshing experience is perfect for anyone looking to spice up their yoga routine.
Free yoga & pilates on the beach
For those who prefer dry land, Beach Yoga and Pilates classes are held every Wednesday at Lake Minnewasta. Thanks to the Healthy Together Now Grant, these classes are completely free.
“We alternate between yoga and Pilates,” Wolfe says. “You just need to register online to get into the lake area for free.”
Pickleball, volleyball, and more at the Access Event Centre
For indoor fitness lovers, Morden is serving up pickleball, volleyball (18+), badminton (14+), and basketball (12+).
“All these programs offer seasonal registration or just $2 drop-in options,” Wolfe says. “Pickleball runs Sundays and Mondays starting in July.”
So whether you’re a regular player or just pickle-curious, there’s a place for you on the court.
Fitness Sampler: Short-term, high-energy classes
Another highlight this summer is the Summer Fitness Sampler with local instructor Deanna Baker.
“We’re doing strength and rhythm classes—think strength training mixed with cardio drumming,” Wolfe says. “There’s also a strength and cardio class. They’re four-week programs, so you don’t have to commit long-term.”
Classes begin July 8th and run Tuesdays from 6–7 PM at the Access Event Centre.
Urban Walking & Poling Club
Prefer something at your own pace? The Urban Walking & Poling Program might be the perfect fit.
“It’s every Tuesday from 7:30 to 8:30 PM,” Wolfe shares. “It’s already started, but anyone can still join—it’s free, thanks to another Healthy Together Now grant.”
The group explores different routes around Morden each week, making it a great way to stay fit and meet new people.
Community basketball challenge for ages 10–13
As part of the ParticipACTION Community Challenge, Morden is running a free basketball program for youth aged 10 to 13 throughout June.
“It’s a fun way to get kids moving and get the community involved,” says Wolfe.
Babysitting courses: Empowering teens for summer jobs
Morden is also hosting Babysitting Courses on June 21, July 19, and August 30.
“For just $65, kids can get certified and be ready for babysitting opportunities over the summer,” Wolfe says. “It’s a great skill builder.”
Got an idea? Reach out!
Wolfe emphasizes that Morden Recreation is always open to hearing from the community.
“If someone has an idea for a new program, I’m always happy to hear it,” she says. “We want to keep growing and adapting to what the community needs.”
