After more than three decades of enriching Manitoba's cultural landscape, Virtuosi Concerts is winding down operations — but its impact will continue through a new partnership with another pillar of Winnipeg’s classical music scene.

On June 17, 2025, the board of the Women’s Musical Club of Winnipeg (WMC) unanimously agreed to a merger that will see Virtuosi’s legacy live on through new initiatives, including a scholarship in the Virtuosi name. The decision follows news of Virtuosi’s recent financial and organizational challenges, which sparked concern among arts supporters across the province.

Founded in 1991, Virtuosi Concerts built a reputation for presenting exceptional chamber music, often featuring a blend of international artists and homegrown talent. Equally vital was its commitment to emerging musicians through its Young Artist Program — a mission closely aligned with the WMC.

“The Women’s Musical Club of Winnipeg was saddened to learn of the challenges faced by Virtuosi Concerts,” said Sandra Roberts, past president of the WMC board. “Their diverse and inspired programming has enriched Winnipeg’s cultural life, and their Young Artist Program has provided welcome opportunities for emerging musicians.”

Recognizing the shared values and vision, WMC accepted a proposal to redirect funds from Virtuosi’s Winnipeg Foundation endowment to their own programming. This includes establishing a new annual scholarship bearing Virtuosi’s name, joining the six prestigious scholarships already offered by the WMC — Manitoba’s largest individual classical music awards.

As part of the merger, Virtuosi board chair Heidi Reimer-Epp has joined the WMC board to help oversee the asset transfer and maintain community relationships. In a heartfelt message to Virtuosi’s supporters, Reimer-Epp expressed deep gratitude.

“This is the end of an organization, but not the end of the relationships we’ve built or the music we hope to continue sharing,” she said. “We are deeply grateful for every moment, every note played, every ticket purchased, every hour volunteered.”

She also gave special thanks to Artistic Producer Jennifer Thiessen, who remained on board through a challenging final season. “Thank you for your artistic vision and your dedication,” Reimer-Epp added.

Virtuosi is now encouraging its audience, donors, and volunteers to shift their support to the WMC by subscribing to their newsletter and attending concerts. As part of the asset transfer, Virtuosi supporters will continue to receive invitations to WMC events.

“Please, visit the website right now at WMCWpg.ca and sign up,” Reimer-Epp urged. “We look forward to listening to the sweet sounds of chamber music with you again — it is, after all, the music of friends.”

Those wishing to discuss the merger further are invited to reach out to Reimer-Epp directly or contact any member of the Virtuosi board.
