On May 31st, 2025, the Community Exchange hosted a block party which included the Great Canadian Neighbour Contest! Altona residents stepped into The Chatterbox, a
vintage camper, to share what makes their Canadian neighbour so great!
Lots of people stepped in to speak well of their neighbours, including Grace and Mickey. Immigrating to Canada from the Philippines during a cold Manitoba winter was shocking. Grace describes how being directed to the MCC thrift store for inexpensive winter clothing was a warming experience!
Caring neighbours “were the first people who helped us to get to know a lot of people here and get around town.” And it was a remarkable experience when people stopped and offered a ride home as Grace and Mickey pushed a shopping cart down snowy sidewalks after picking up groceries at the Altona Mall. Take a listen!
Students from a radio team class at Canadian Mennonite University conducted the interviews and produced the stories.
