Boldt Con, Humboldt’s own comics and related media convention, has remained a popular part of the Humboldt Summer Sizzler. This year promises another great display of Canadian and international comics goodness, along with a cast of pop culture curio creators and the ever-popular cos players with new and stunning characters and getup to marvel at.

Jeff Burton, creator of the heartland hero Auroraman, has been at the helm of the endeavour since the beginning. The event takes place on Saturday, June 28 from 12 – 6 pm in Jubilee Hall at the Uniplex.

“We’ve got a fantastic lineup of exciting things coming to Boldt Con this year,” Burton promises. “We have nine different comic creators, both artists and writers, and they are here to show off their wares and introduce their characters. It’s going to be cool to see what they have for us.”

Burton says the spectacle is in the mixture of characters, genres, imaginative settings and fantastic plots that unfold within the pages of these independent wonders. The art styles and their different takes on storytelling are worth repeated looks.

“Alongside that, we bring in cosplayers dressed as their favourite comic book, movie or video game characters. It’s so much fun to see that and to see people joining in and dressing up along with these people at the comic con.”

Vendors have a great set of merchandise that matches the quickly evolving landscape of characters and artistic styles. A relatively new tech advance, portable 3D printing, allows artists to create unique and customizable character models for sale.

“There are vendors selling vintage comics, collectibles and toys, and all kinds of fun stuff,” Burton says. There are 30 different booths in Jubilee Hall and admission is totally free. One of the booths is Cosmic Comics Canada, and they have a table of free comics that people can pick up and enjoy.”

The artist and players are without exception happy to chat about their creations and give fans an insight into the creative world of comics and their individual culture crafts.

Of course, Auroraman comics and merch will be featured.

“We have issue 13 we released last fall, our Saskatchewan “ghostbusters” adventure in Englefeld. We have a new mega-collection – Volume 3 – that collects everything that’s been out of print including the hard to find Annual. And we have two new series of trading cards for Auroraman that will debut at the show on Saturday.”

Comic lovers, cosplayers, and creative spirits will find their home at this Saturday’s Boldt Con at Jubilee Hall as part of the Humboldt Summer Sizzler.
