Summer is here, and the Jake Epp Public Library is starting their Summer Reading Challenge for kindergarten to grade 12.
Logan Peters, child and youth program coordinator at the Jake Epp Library, is looking forward to what the summer has in store.
“Every time they have come into the library, and read a book, they can fill out a raffle ticket and we put it in (for) their prize of choice,” Peters says.
Learning and growing
The summer challenge is about more than just material wins.
“It keeps the kids learning... and I think it's a fun way to keep the kids excited about something,” Peters says.
She says reading over the summer keeps kids in touch with their education, readying them for the eventual return to classes, as well as provides them with a schedule.
Alongside educational benefits, Peters notes the importance of fostering creativity,
“It’s (also) important for their imagination... and everything that comes along with that. It keeps your mind growing.”
Fun for the whole family
When the summer, and reading challenge, comes to an end, the library will have a party to celebrate, Peters says.
"We’ll pull names for each of the prizes (for the summer reading challenge)," she explains.
In addition to the reading challenge, the Jake Epp Library also has many summer programs to register for, free of charge and no library membership required.
From improv, arts and crafts, book clubs, board games, puzzles, and movies, there is something for everyone.
“It’s good for the community, gives parents a bit of a break, and keeps kids learning but in a fun way,” Peters says.
