Art lovers and curious visitors alike are once again hitting the road for the annual Spirit of Manitou Studio Trail, an event that brings together local artists and artisans across several Saskatchewan communities. Now in its 16th year, the event features 18 participants offering a wide range of creative disciplines, from painting and quilting to woodworking and ceramics.
"This year, we have a really good cross section of artists and artisans," said Loa Titman, a long-time trail participant and owner of Concrete Elements. "We’ve got painters, sculptors, potters, and three very different woodworkers — each with their own unique style and purpose."
The self-guided tour covers Meacham, Viscount, Plunkett, Guernsey, Watrous, and Manitou Beach, where the highest concentration of artists can be found. Visitors follow signage marked with the Spirit of Manitou logo to find the studios and pop-up galleries. Some artists open their homes or share space in communal galleries, offering visitors an intimate view into their creative world.
“For those of us with the space, we welcome people right into our work areas,” said Titman. “At our place, for example, we show the whole process of how we create concrete ornaments — from mold to finished product. We’re not pouring cement that day, but we walk you through every step.”
Other artists also provide behind-the-scenes looks at their techniques. A local quilter showcases works in progress, giving insight into the craft's intricacies. Woodworkers highlight the materials they choose and why, from appreciating the grain to creating visual contrasts.
“It really helps visitors understand the thought and craftsmanship that goes into each piece,” said Titman. “It’s not just about looking at art, it’s about connecting with how it’s made.”
The Manitou Studio Trail is featured in the Watrous-Manitou Activities Guide, which Titman praised as a valuable resource for both tourists and locals. "They’ve printed around 25,000 copies and distributed them across the province. It really helps people see what’s happening in the area on any given weekend," she said.
With its blend of open studios, interactive demos, and diverse artistic talent, the Studio Trail continues to be a vibrant cultural event drawing visitors year after year.
The 2025 Manitou Studio Trail runs throughout the weekend. Saturday, July 12 hours are from 10 am – 7 pm. Sunday, July 13 hours are from noon – 6 pm. Maps and more information can be found in local shops and online at Home - Watrous Manitou.
