Back to Batoche Days, Canada’s largest outdoor Indigenous festival, kicks off today in Batoche, Saskatchewan, running through July 20. Hosted by Métis Nation–Saskatchewan, the annual event brings together Métis citizens, families, and visitors from across the country to celebrate Métis culture through music, dance, food, sport, and traditional teachings.
Over four days, festival goers will experience a wide array of cultural and recreational activities including jigging, fiddling, square dancing, artisan showcases, voyageur games, and children’s programming. The event also features horse races, a slo-pitch tournament, and various cultural demonstrations. Organizers say the event is designed to offer something for everyone, with programming that spans generations and interests.
This year’s entertainment lineup includes a range of local and national performers. Among the headliners is Rebecca Strong, a 21-year-old Denesuline singer from Stony Rapids, SK, and winner of Canada’s Got Talent Season 3. Strong will also serve as a guest judge for the “Batoche Idol” singing competition, which takes place July 18 and 19.
Festival goers can also look forward to live performances by Mystic Highway, a Creedence Clearwater Revival tribute band known for recreating the band’s iconic sound, and Shania Twin, the long-running Shania Twain tribute act led by Donna Huber. Rounding out the musical lineup is Chelsie Young, a country artist from Bigstone Cree Nation, performing alongside her band Kootenay & Co.
A key component of the festival is the Slo-Pitch Tournament, featuring 12 teams competing throughout the weekend. The event emphasizes community spirit, inclusivity, and good sportsmanship, with prize payouts awarded after each game.
The festival grounds are located at the historic site of Batoche, a location of deep significance to Métis history and identity. Organizers note that public participation and engagement continue to grow each year, with Back to Batoche Days serving as both a cultural gathering and a celebration of Métis resilience and pride.
