Grunthal Motocross (GMX) is revving up for its big summer weekend set for August 23rd to 24th – but what exactly can visitors expect, especially if it’s their first time?

A sensory rush from start to finish

Expect loud revving engines, swirling dirt, and that unmistakable smell of gas and grease. Race fans can wander through the pits, watching riders and crews tinker on bikes between heats. Across the weekend, ages range from pint‑sized thrill‑seekers to seasoned racers in their 60s and beyond. As Aaron Toews, event organizer, puts it, “You can show up and just watch, but you’re also welcome to walk around and ask riders questions about their bikes.”

Saturday night pit‑bike entertainment

After a full day of practice (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.) on Saturday, the pit‑bike races kick in around 5 p.m. Little bikes, big thrills – these races are smaller in scale but huge on fun, and admission is free until Sunday’s main events begin.

Pure adrenaline

Toews describes the gate drop as “carnage”: up to 40 bikes line up, engines roaring, bumping elbows into the first corner. “Your handlebars are a few inches from the bike beside you… guys are bumping into each other” – all part of motocross’s controlled chaos. First‑time spectators will want to catch that explosive start and then head in‑field via tunnel access to watch bikes fly past on all sides.

More than just motorsports

This year, a full canteen operated by a local vendor will offer burgers, fries, pizza, breakfast, ice cream, hot coffee – plus a special Ukrainian‑style item. Toews says it’s one less scramble on race day: “Having a canteen set up is so much simpler for us. It’s great!”

Track talk: dirt matters

The track’s deep loamy soil sets it apart from the hard‑pack surfaces in Brandon and eastern Manitoba. This gives the track a reputation for handling rain – so much so, that even when Saturday practice had to pause due to wet conditions, they assured riders: “Trust the process – it was fantastic on Sunday.” The terrain adds its own test of skill, as riders find the best lines through churning soil.

Build‑it and break‑it

Motocross is part riding, part mechanical repair. Some racers handle their own bike maintenance, while others rely on family or friends. Swappable parts mean quick fixes, and durability is key. Riders regularly crash: “It’s not a question of if – it’s when,” Toews notes.

He recalls a few spills of his own – dislocating a shoulder, breaking a wrist – but high‑quality protective gear keeps injuries manageable.

Community momentum

Grunthal Motocross isn’t just growing – it’s thriving. Wednesday night practices have increased from 70 riders to over 100 this year, and weekend spectator attendance averages around 1,200. Situated just 45 minutes from Winnipeg with nearby amenities, the venue draws both local and regional fans. Parking may be tight, but being “basically in town” keeps logistics manageable.

Hosted with enthusiasm and powered by community spirit, Grunthal Motocross offers grassroots excitement for racers and spectators alike. Whether you’re a gear‑head, a family looking for entertainment, or simply someone who loves the thrill of speed and dirt, this event promises an unforgettable weekend.
