After finishing third in the Saskatchewan softball 17U B provincials, Swift Current Sonics Head Coach Terry Pavely is proud of the way his team competed.

"We probably played better small ball than any other team in the tournament and maybe the province throughout the year," Pavely said. "Our bunting and our baserunning was superior to most teams.

"A kid might have got up to bat and hit a triple and a double, and the next time we asked them to bunt the ball. Our girls would lay it down. Whatever they could do to help their team they would."

Swift Current went 5-0 and in dominant fashion heading into the semifinal with Macklin.

"In some tough weather conditions, they made fewer mistakes than we did," Pavely said. "It kind of got away from us. They're a really good team. We walked a few too many kids, and we made a few errors. Good teams capitalize, and that's what they did."

Pavely was impressed with how the Sonic bounced back from that loss to win the bronze medal 14-0 over the Valley Vipers.

"It was a really good weekend overall," he said. "To respond in the bronze medal game... it's sometimes really difficult to play. We responded better. We played pretty solid. Our defence throughout the weekend was pretty good."

They finished the season 28-8-2 overall with only four graduating players.

The U17 Sonic were one of three Swift Current teams to win provincial medals in softball this summer.
