With warm weather on the way this weekend, it’s a perfect opportunity to get out and enjoy some good friends, good food, good memories, and just a good time. That’s the plan for this upcoming Sunday in Fillmore as they’ve announced their first-ever Fillmore Heritage Day will wrap up the final weekend of July. Tracey Kyrylchuk, mayor of Fillmore, says it’ll be a fun Sunday for the community.
“Well, council has declared the last Sunday in July as Heritage Day out here in Fillmore. This year. we're kind of starting out small. We're going to have the museums going to be open in the afternoon from 1:00 to 4:00 P.M. and if you haven't checked out our museum yet, you really need to come out here and have a look. It's quite awesome. We're going to have live music on the lawn at the museum while it's open, and that's going to be provided by our local band called The Blend and Soo-Line Cruisers are coming up to put some of their cars on display.”
Later on in the afternoon, there will be a decoration ceremony at the cemetery in Fillmore with remembrance. Kyrylchuk recommends bringing a lawn chair if you are interested in attending. After the service, there will be a potluck supper at the community hall for people to bring their favourite dishes and enjoy. There is also a newly renovated Legion room in the community hall that will be open to check out as well. Kyrylchuk explains the reasoning behind creating this new Heritage Day.
“Well, this is the first one. We've just decided that we need to have something to bring the Community out and bring people home maybe for the weekend and so we just decided that this is kind of a good day to do it. We're starting out small and then next year, we hope to build on it and maybe get some more of our town organizations involved and do some other things. Maybe a slow pitch tournament, maybe a street dance Saturday night. You know, things like that. But we're just starting out small this year and going to get some people out.”
