The Veterans Association Food Bank in Grande Prairie is doing more than stocking shelves, it’s changing lives.

Events Coordinator Jon Bartlett recently shared how the organization has grown from humble beginnings into a vital support hub for local veterans. “We started with six veterans and were up to 25 by our first Christmas,” Bartlett said. “Now we serve more than 35 veterans and their families each month.”

After outgrowing their original location, the team moved into a new, more accessible building in June 2024. “It’s made a big difference,” he said. “There’s more space, and it’s easier for veterans to come in without facing 17 stairs just to get help.”

The organization provides far more than food. Their programs help veterans transition out of homelessness, offering temporary shelter, assistance finding permanent housing, and monthly food hampers. “Once they get back on their feet or their families join them, we keep helping until they’re stable, whether that means getting a job or accessing benefits,” Bartlett explained.

That support often includes help navigating Veterans Affairs, setting up bank accounts, or accessing medical care. “When they leave the military, many don’t get what they’re entitled to,” Bartlett said. “We help connect them to those resources.”

Community events play a significant role in keeping these initiatives going. You will find their team at local rodeos, classic car gatherings, and summer festivals raising awareness and gathering donations, whether it is food, funds, or essentials for hampers.

One of the biggest fundraisers of the year is the Veterans Gala, happening this year on Saturday, November 1 at the D’Coy Armouries. The evening includes dinner from Red Rock, live music, a dance, silent auction, and a powerful presentation of handmade Quilts of Valor, comforting gifts sewn with care for five local veterans. “They’re made with love,” Bartlett said. “And every time we present one, someone’s in tears.”

Tickets for the gala are available at 10920 84th Ave (behind the TMG The Mortgage Group, near No Frills). Single tickets are $100, or $700 for a table of eight, with 100% of proceeds supporting veterans right here in our community.

Donations of non-perishable food items are always welcome, and their Facebook page features regularly updated wish lists with the most-needed supplies for upcoming hampers.

“It doesn’t matter if it’s one can or a full bag, every bit helps,” said Bartlett. “We’re here to make sure no veteran falls through the cracks.”
