A sweet initiative is underway at Homestead Co-op this weekend, combining cupcakes and compassion to help animals in need.

Till August 3, Homestead Co-op is running a special fundraiser in support of the Portage Animal Welfare Society (PAWS). The promotion features a six-pack of vanilla cupcakes for just $5.00, with $1.00 from every sale donated directly to PAWS. Alongside the cupcakes, customers will also find displays of pet food, which can be purchased and donated on-site.

"We're thrilled to partner with Homestead Co-op," said Christina Nesbitt, fundraising coordinator for PAWS. "The support from the community and local businesses makes such a huge difference for our shelter animals."

PAWS was on-site yesterday, giving visitors the chance to meet some of their adoptable animals. Among the guests was Zeus, a friendly dog known for his one ear up, one ear down look, and one of the shelter's adoptable cats.

In addition to financial contributions, PAWS is accepting pet supply donations during the event. Top priorities include canned cat food, unscented clumping cat litter, scratch pads, toys, and sturdy dog cables.

"We go through over 2,700 cans of cat food each year." Nesbitt noted.

The fundraiser was initiated by Cheryl Tully, the bakery manager at Homestead Co-op's Portage location.

"She's a huge animal lover and really wanted to give back," Nesbitt explained. "And the cupcakes, they're delicious and so colorful!"

Shannon Vaughn, marketing and communications manager for Homestead Co-op, emphasized the cooperative's commitment to community support.

"Our bakery manager thought this would be a great opportunity to support PAWS," Vaughn said. "Giving back to local charities is a big part of our business model."

Customers can easily participate by purchasing the cupcake packs or choosing pet food and supplies to donate.

"Just let the cashier know the items are for PAWS," Vaughn added. "It's a simple, effective way to help."

Looking ahead, PAWS is also planning a family-friendly cat yoga event this August, opening it up to participants aged 14 and older for the first time. "It's a great way for people to relax, meet our cats, and support our mission in a fun setting," said Nesbitt.

For those looking to make a difference, this cupcake fundraiser offers a sweet way to support PAWS.
