More than two decades after the original release, Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ sequel is set to be released in two parts.
Debuting on Good Friday 2027 will be The Resurrection of the Christ: Part One. Then, 40 days later on Ascension Day, part two will be released.
The Passion of the Christ grossed $370 million in North America after its 2004 debut and over $610 million worldwide.
While many details about the film have yet to be released, Gibson is going to be the producer along with longtime collaborator Bruce Davey under their Icon Productions banner.
“For many, many people across the globe, The Resurrection of the Christ is the most anticipated theatrical event in a generation. It is also an awe-inspiring and spectacularly epic theatrical film that is going to leave moviegoers worldwide breathless,” said Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson.
Filming of The Resurrection of the Christ will take place in the same location as the original 2004 film at Rome’s Cinecittà Studios. Production will also take place in the same location as it did 20 years ago in the Italian town of Matera, along with other locations such as Ginosa, Gravina Laterza and Altamura.
Jim Caviezel is set to return to portray Jesys, while Maia Morgenstern as Mary and Francesco De Vito as Peter.
Caviezel said on the Arroyo Grande show, "I'm not going to play Jesus, I need Him to play me."
The actor who is now 56-years-old will be digitally de-aged to portray a 33-year-old Jesus.
The Resurrection of the Christ: Part One is set to be released March 26, 2027.
