August 7th marked a new chapter for the village of Neubergthal, the first ever organized farmers market!

The Inspiration

Ron Martens is the market coordinator for the new Neubergthal Farmers Market and touched on how the market finally came to be, "people have been growing gardens for years, decades... but nobody's come together in a farmers market kind of venue that I'm aware of here in the village to do this.

I didn't grow up here, I married Karen, who grew up here, and we moved back in 1999. And and I've been away in the trucking industry most of that time. So I really couldn't start anything, but nobody else did either. I've tried other things in the past and they all worked well, but I just wasn't there to offer continuity from year to year and so, couldn't continue with it.

It's a National Historic site (Neubergthal) and it's a great place to be and we're trying to make it a market and a "market plus" that's why the food vendor and we hope to grow that "market plus" side as the weeks go on".

Focusing on Local

Ron also talked about the focus on only having vendors from the village, "At this moment, we focused on having all the vendors being connected to the village of Neubergthal, whether they live here directly or have lived here, grew up here... to have a personal connection to the village, and that's the 'brackets' we put on who could be a vendor."

Products & Vendors

"We should have about 14 vendors this evening selling everything from food products through to fruits and vegetables; herbs and garlics, beets, carrots, tomatoes., rhubarb, rhubarb jam, jams and jellies will be part of it... apples, apple pie, cookies, relish, brownies, broccoli, honey and sweet corn.

Now these things won't all be available at the same time because the harvest is ongoing. Whatever is in the garden that you might find, then we've got some other people who are making handicrafts. So things that they make in their home they want to try to sell. There will be two metal workers coming actually to sell their wares as well."

BBQ

In addition to all the wonderful sellers and vendors, Ron sets up a smoker packed with Pioneer Meat sausage products, one burger style, one wiener style, finish out the meal with a drink and an ice product for $10 and then enjoy your meal at the Hamm House which is outfitted with all the amenities of a picnic shelter.

When & Where?

When: Every Thursday, 5:00-7:00pm

Where: 5013, Road 1 W

"So that's just three miles east on the 421 from 30, and that intersection is Road 1 W you turned left, and it's the first yard on the right."
