For more than two decades, The Cellar Door has been a fixture in Portage la Prairie, offering hair, skin, massage, and nail services in a space that feels both stylish and comfortable.
Owner and stylist Chelsea Lewis, who took the reins in 2011, says the salon’s heart lies in its people.
“We’re a team of 14 talented women – an all-female crew who genuinely love what we do and the people we serve,” she says. “We believe in creating an inclusive, respectful space where everyone feels seen, valued, and celebrated.”
That commitment shows from the moment clients walk through the door. Guests are greeted with a smile, offered coffee or water, and welcomed into a warm, buzzing atmosphere that blends modern design with the comfort of a favourite hangout.
Inclusive pricing and a full-service menu
The Cellar Door uses gender-neutral pricing based on parts and labour, so clients pay only for the time, skill, and product used.
The service menu includes haircuts, colours, extensions, barbering, facials, dermaplaning, photofacials, massage therapy, gel nails, brows, and more. A curated boutique features professional haircare, skincare, and makeup lines – many of them Canadian, sustainable, or locally made – alongside seasonal gift items like candles, honey, and toques.
“We’re picky in the best way,” says Lewis. “We only bring in products we truly love and believe in, from brands that align with our values.”
Recent additions include permanent jewellery, and the salon’s long-time commitment to Dermalogica earned it recognition as a 2025 Skin Insider Centre.
More than just a salon
Lewis emphasizes that The Cellar Door is a place for connection as much as it is for beauty services. The team’s career-based approach includes an in-house apprenticeship program led by senior stylist Kris Verwey, designed to keep talent local and help the next generation of stylists thrive.
“It’s the little extras that set us apart – warm towels, complimentary beverages, foot rests, extra pillows for comfort,” Lewis says. “We’re all about making the experience as relaxing as it is beautiful.”
A loyalty program rewards regulars with points on every purchase, redeemable for services and products. Walk-ins are accepted when possible, but appointments – easily booked by phone or online – are recommended.
