The Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra has put out a call for a new executive director.
Angela Birdsell announced earlier this month that she will not renew her contract as executive director.
"When I was engaged by the WSO, I was committed to ensure the long-term future of an organization which is close to my heart," said Birdsell in a statement released by the WSO. "We have come through the eye of the needle post-pandemic, thanks to the gradual return of audiences, to the generous support of so many patrons, including governments, and the cooperation and steadfast support of musicians, administration and the Board. While we are not entirely out of the woods, we now see light through the trees with regards to the stability of our operations."
Although Birdsell's role will not come to a close until the end of 2026, the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra would like to have a new executive director in place by the end of 2025.
"The Board of Directors is extremely grateful for the leadership of Angela Birdsell through what has been an extremely challenging few years for the WSO," said Board Chair Curt Vossen. "She has worked with the Board and stakeholders to map out a strategy that will ensure stability, resiliency, flexibility and artistic excellence for the orchestra in the long term. The incumbent will carry the strategic plan forward and work closely with the WSO team as we now advance the WSO’s exciting and ambitious plans."
The future executive director will take on the orchestra's five-year strategic plan, helping to lead the administration of the WSO. They will also work closely with the music directors, administrators and Board of Directors to secure a future in its own venue.
Birdsell has agreed to work with the WSO Board to help ensure a smooth transition.
A search committee, which will include Birdsell, will begin reviewing applications in early fall.
