A judge, best known for his compassion and unwavering belief in the goodness of people, has died.
Judge Frank Caprio passed away peacefully on Wednesday after a long and courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.
"Judge Caprio touched the lives of millions through his work in the courtroom and beyond," said his family in a post on social media. "His warmth, humour, and kindness left an indelible mark on all who knew him."
Judge Caprio was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in late 2023. He underwent treatment and reached remission. However, he fell ill recently.
Just days before his death, Judge Caprio reached out to his followers asking for prayers.
"Last year I asked you to pray for me, and it's very obvious you did because I came through a very difficult period," said Frank in a post on social media. "Unfortunately, I've had a setback and I'm back in the hospital now, and I'm coming to you again, asking you to remember me in your prayers once more, and so I ask you again if it's not too much that you can remember me in your prayers. I'm a great believer in the power of prayer. I think the almighty above is looking over us, so remember me, please."
His family is thankful for the outpouring of love, compassion, and kindness they have received.
"Judge Caprio lived his life guided by empathy, fairness, and an unwavering belief in the goodness of people," said his family. "To see so many of you share stories, memories, and words of comfort has touched our hearts in ways we cannot fully express."
The Caprio family says the messages, prayers, and acts of remembrance from across the country and around the globe have been a source of strength for them during this time of profound loss.
"Your tributes reflect the legacy he leaves behind—not only as a judge, but as a man who sought to spread understanding and compassion in a world that so often needs it," said the Caprio family. "In his honour, may we each strive to bring a little more compassion into the world — just as he did every day."
A service will be held in Providence, Rhode Island, on Thursday, Aug. 28 and Friday, Aug. 29.
Caprio was 88.
