According to its executive director, Nettie Dyck, the Winkler Senior Centre is a place for those who want meaningful volunteering experiences in the community as much as it is a chance to get out to socialize, make new friends, and find belonging.
The centre also has a variety of programming that can facilitate these connections.
“The least intimidating program we have is our morning coffee, because you don't have to have special skills,” said Dyck. “You sit at a big table with lots of people, and even if you don't want to talk and you're not ready to share, you can sit and listen.”
Dyck added that she has seen firsthand the support networks that develop through the morning coffee.
“It becomes a community,” she said.
Supporting social opportunities
Programming like the coffee break (along with other activities and initiatives that the Winkler Senior Centre organizes), is partially supported by the centre’s annual barbecue fundraiser.
It’s a cherished tradition.
Dyck said that this year’s event takes place on August 28th at 5 p.m. The meal will be the “classic” combination that has returned to the Winkler Senior Centre year after year — burgers, baked beans, coleslaw, and a drink.

In addition to raising funds for the centre, which Dyck said receives government funding and grants but still needs to “top up” the amount to be covered for the year, the goal for the community event is also to raise awareness of the centre’s programming.
“We'll have representatives from the programs, so if people want to come in and ask questions or register, they're certainly welcome to do that,” she said.
Keeping community accessible
Dyck said that the funding also helps with the Winkler Senior Centre’s mission to keep its programming affordable for the community, so that regardless of who one is, there is an opportunity to build a circle of support.
She said that one of her favourite days at the centre is Thursdays, which brings in approximately 200 people a month for floor curling.
