“You’re running on an actual airfield, with aircraft just steps away- that’s not something you see every day.”
Southport RUNway, happening Saturday, September 13th, is a 5km or 10km run or walk through the Southport community, with a unique airside experience that offers participants an up-close view of various aircraft in and around Southport CYPG. And for the first time, they’re introducing the one-kilometer Kids Run, offering a shorter, supervised route for young runners.
This community-centered event is designed to promote health, wellness, and family engagement in a fun way, while also providing participants with a memorable, one-of-a-kind experience.
“It’s for everyone- runners, walkers, families, aviation lovers, kids, seniors, and community groups,” says Southport Aerospace Marketing Specialist Chimere Ogbonna.
Participants can expect a high-energy, family-focused event with aircraft photo ops, music, swag bags, and even breakfast. All participants in the 5 kilometer and 10 kilometer events will receive medals, and kids in the Kids Run will receive ribbons to celebrate their accomplishment. After the race, don’t miss the Revolve 360° photo booth- a fun way to capture the excitement and memories of the day!
Ogbonna stresses that this event is all about moving together as a community. Participants are welcome to run, walk, jog, or even push a stroller. And although they love furry runners, too, dogs are not permitted on the grounds for safety reasons, so keep the leash at home.
Runners are invited to collect pledges, where proceeds raised will be added to the Southport Fund- an endowment fund held with the Community Foundation of Portage & District. Here, the money will be put towards annual projects and programs that uplift and strengthen the local economy.
“We've worked with the Community Foundation for many years, be it through golf tournaments, community fundraisers, and now Southport RUNway to grow our endowment fund and, likewise, continue to grow the support we provide for our community. The endowment fund is currently at $71,209.73 as of August 20th, 2025, and resulted in a community contribution of $3,552.74 in 2024.”
Southport Aerospace Centre has big plans for the funds raised.
“The Foundation carefully assesses local needs and allocates grants to registered charities and organizations working on community transformation,” Ogbonna states. “Every dollar makes a difference close to home. The Community Foundation has a proven track record of distributing funding to meaningful projects- supporting youth, seniors, mental health, the arts, recreation, and education across the region. They are deeply embedded in our community’s growth and well-being.”
This event has been well-received for three years running, and the Southport Aerospace Centre sends a heartfelt thank you to this year’s early sponsors and supporters.
