It's going to be a musical afternoon at Kinsmen Park in Strathmore.
On Saturday (Aug. 30), local music group Story and Song is hosting an open-air jam to celebrate Play Music on The Porch Day, a worldwide initiative that encourages a day of listening to live music.
"As musicians, we've learned that music sounds better when the musicians listen to each other," said member Brenda-Le Graff. "When everybody tries to outdo each other and strum as loud as they can, they don't hear the nuance of another person playing. It becomes noise."
The event takes place from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and will also feature local food trucks to cater to the hungry musicians. All residents are invited to bring an instrument and play along, or to just visit and listen.
Graff said the event is open for musicians of all skill levels, but is limited to acoustic instruments only, with no speakers or microphones at the park.
"If you want to enjoy the music, you need to come up and close and listen. That's what this open-air jam is all about. Play Music on The Porch promotes peace, celebrates freedom, and is a day of community all around the world," added Graff. "Music overrides hatred. Music overrides fear."
Strathmore is featured on the Play Music on The Porch Day website, which showcases a map of everywhere that is celebrating the day. This includes events featured on every continent except for Antarctica.
Story and Song is always looking for new members, hosting regular acoustic jams twice a month in Strathmore. They currently meet on the first and third Thursday of every month.
"It doesn't have to be just this Saturday. It could be anytime during the month," added Graff.
