Prairie Sky Co-op will bring the food, fun, and community spirit for a free event this afternoon from 3 to 6 p.m. The first annual Customer Appreciation Barbecue will be held in the Weyburn Food Store parking lot, kicking off a new tradition that hearkens back to a preceding custom.
Despite the heavy wind today prompting a wind warning from Environment Canada, the event will proceed with some modifications to ensure everyone's enjoyment.
"We want to thank our customers for sticking with us and supporting us," said General Manager Kevin Arthur. "There's going to be a free meal. There's going to be games and activities for all ages, some stuff for our Kids Club members, and a chance to sign up for a free Co-op membership if you're not already a member."
Co-op memberships regularly cost $10, but at the event, non-members will be able to sign up for free, enabling a lifetime of rewards, including the promise of high-quality products and service at competitive prices.
Arthur said that in the past, their community barbecue coincided with Equity Days, when members would pick up their equity cheques. However, since the cheques are now being mailed out for the convenience of their members, the barbecues will now become a chance for everyone in the community to enjoy.
"Previously, we did a noon barbecue, and it didn't give a chance for families to come, so this is a bit of a change, as it will be happening after school, and we hope we get lots of families and kids coming out."
"This is our way of saying thank you to the community for your ongoing support," said Arthur. "Events like this highlight the importance of shopping local. When you support Prairie Sky Co-op, you’re helping to strengthen our community."
He added that everyone is welcome to bring the whole family, friends, and join in on an afternoon of food, fun, and community spirit.
While the event is free, there will be an opportunity for guests to make a donation to the Weyburn Humane Society.
