Community spirit will be on full display this Thursday, September 11, as Olymel hosts its annual Giving Back Together barbecue fundraiser in support of the Humboldt and District Food Bank. The event will take place in the Olymel parking lot on Highway 5 east from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm.

Organized by the team at Olymel, the event aims to raise funds and awareness for food insecurity in the region. Attendees can enjoy a lunch of pork souvlaki burgers, along with a drink and snack items, all for a donation to the food bank.

“This event is really about neighbours helping neighbours,” said Lori Rowat, Manager of Human Resources at Olymel. “We’re excited to once again bring people together for a good meal and a great cause.”

If the weather doesn’t cooperate, the event will move indoors to Olymel’s building to ensure the fundraiser continues rain or shine.

Later in the day, Olymel employees will also be delivering 15 hot meals to local farmers working in the fields. In return, those farms are invited to make a donation to the food bank.

“Feeding people is at the heart of what we do,” said Rowat. “Our mission statement is Together we feed the world. We produce food that goes around the globe, and the food bank provides food to those in need right here in our own backyard. It’s a partnership that just makes sense.”

The event is also made possible through the support of several community businesses.

“We’ve reached out to vendors and partners we work with throughout the year,” Rowat explained. “Many small and large businesses have stepped up to contribute to the day. It’s amazing to see how generous this community can be.”

Rowat hopes for good weather and an even better turnout.

“We really want to encourage everyone to stop by, grab some lunch, and support a local cause that makes a big difference.”

All proceeds from the Giving Back Together barbecue will go directly to the Humboldt and District Food Bank.
