Portage la Prairie’s Royal Canadian Legion Branch 65 is set to mark Legion Week from September 13 to 20 with a full slate of events. The week begins with a Saturday dinner followed by karaoke. Karaoke has become a weekly staple at the branch.
Bob Oldford, past president of the Portage Legion, says the week will feature a mix of entertainment, community gatherings, and traditional events.
“On Monday is our bingo and electronic darts that are downstairs. And Tuesday is the general meeting for all the current members,” notes Oldford.
He adds that Wednesday will bring one of the week’s highlights, with a cenotaph dedication at 2 p.m. downtown, followed by the annual veterans dinner at the branch. More than 140 people are expected.
Supporting community and tradition
The Portage Legion was established on December 6, 1928, and is approaching its centennial. Over the decades, it has supported veterans, honoured the fallen, and contributed to community groups such as Meals on Wheels and the Herman Prior Activity Centre.
“Anyone can become a member of the Legion,” says Oldford.
He continues that the branch now counts around 450 members, making it one of the largest rural Legions in Manitoba. That number is climbing again after the pandemic, with a mix of veterans, families, and community supporters joining.
Week continues with music, games, and family events
Entertainment continues Thursday with Larry McLennon and friends performing in the lounge followed by crib and shuffleboard tournaments in the evening. Friday will feature the popular meat draw, Chase the Ace, and a performance by Jimmy Sharp’s band.
Saturday caps off the week with a craft, garage, and bake sale starting at 9 a.m., along with a canteen serving breakfast and lunch. Silent auctions, a 50/50 draw, and karaoke in the evening will close the celebrations.
Oldford says Legion Week is now observed across Canada during the third week of September, and Portage continues to build on its long tradition.
