The alleged shooter who killed Charlie Kirk, an evangelical Christian and conservative activist and close ally to Donald Trump, is in custody.
The Associated Press reports that a law enforcement official says the suspect is a 22-year-old Utah resident, Tyler Robinson.
Kirk was fatally shot while speaking at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah, on September 10, at 12:20 p.m.
President Donald Trump went on Fox & Friends on Friday morning for a live interview to confirm the news. "With a high degree of certainty, we have him. Somebody that was very close to him said, ‘Hmm, that’s him,’” Trump said.
The Associated Press is reporting that the suspect indicated to a family friend who was a minister and also involved in law enforcement that he was connected to the shooting, as he was critical of Kirk's beliefs.
In 2012, Kirk co-founded Turning Point USA, a nonprofit political organization based in Arizona.
Trump said on Fox & Friends, “He wanted to help young people, and he didn’t deserve this. He was really a good person.”
The Associated Press is reporting that the FBI believe the shooting was targeted. "I can tell you this was a targeted event,” said Robert Bohls, the top FBI agent in Salt Lake City.
More to come.
