If you look up tonight, keep an eye out: the Northern Lights are on display over Steinbach, offering a rare and beautiful spectacle for those willing to brave the night sky. Flickers of green, and maybe pink or purple hues, may drift across the northern horizon—an awe-inspiring reminder of the natural wonders above us.

What Are the Northern Lights?

The Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis, are the result of electrons colliding with the upper reaches of Earth’s atmosphere. Click here for more information from the NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration)

When Are They Most Visible in Southern Manitoba (Including Steinbach)?

While northern locales like Churchill see auroras many nights of the year, southern Manitoba can get good views under the right conditions. Key factors include:

  • Dark, clear skies (cloud cover will block the view).

  • Low light pollution — move away from bright city lights if possible.

  • High solar activity or magnetic storms — these increase the chance of strong auroral displays.

As for timing: the best seasons are late fall through winter and into early spring. That's when the nights are longer, the sky gets dark earlier and more people are awake to notice the lights.

Tonight’s Viewing Tips

  • Find a location with as little artificial light as possible. Even nearby streetlights can wash out fainter auroras.

  • You might need bug repellent.
