After 55 years in broadcasting, Phil Johnson is signing off from his daily morning show on AM1150, marking the end of an era for the iconic radio host.

Johnson, 77, began his career in broadcasting at CKKR in Rosetown, Sask., where he worked night shifts, connecting with truckers and listeners across the province. “I was talking to truckers and everybody else as they were making their way across Saskatchewan,” he recalled.

Johnson worked at several stations across Canada in news, marketing, and sales before moving to Kelowna, B.C., when AM1150 launched. He rose to prominence during the 2003 wildfires, filling in on air during 24/7 coverage, which led to his long-running morning show on the station’s news, talk, and sports format.

“I survived a stroke, but I feel great and I’m excited for the next chapter,” Johnson said. Though he is retiring from daily broadcasting, he plans to remain active with special one-hour Thursday morning interviews and potential short editorial segments.

Johnson is leaving behind a legacy rooted in Saskatchewan and marked by decades of storytelling and connection with his audience.
