Portage la Prairie firefighters were called to a small garage fire on 3rd Street Northwest at about 6:30 p.m. Sunday. Chief Brad Bailey says crews were on scene for a couple of hours before clearing.

The garage was located against the back lane, and firefighters returned later that night when smoke was reported. Bailey notes they went back just before midnight to ensure it was fully out.

“Itwas starting to smoke, so we went back just to deal with that,” says Bailey.

Cause determined accidental

Bailey confirms there was no suspicious activity linked to the fire.

“No, none. It'll just be accidental,” he says.

The garage sustained some smoke, water, and fire damage. Bailey adds the damage was limited.

“I'd note just some contents, the smoke and water, fire damage for the contents inside,” notes Bailey.

Fire crews respond with two trucks

Two trucks were dispatched to the call, and the blaze was quickly extinguished.

“Two trucks responded. Fire was quickly extinguished. Investigated.,” says Bailey.

The fire did not reignite, though one corner of the garage began smouldering and was put out when crews returned.

“It just started to smolder in one of the corners of the garage. So ,we just went and made sure that it was all out,” adds Bailey.
