A newly redeveloped playground in Westwood is open to the public.
John Steel Park is located at 300 Westwood Drive, and the City is excited for residents to use it. "Parks are more than green spaces—they are places where neighbours connect, children play, and nature thrives," said Doug Eyolfson, Member of Parliament for Winnipeg West in a news release. "I’m proud to support initiatives that enhance our quality of life and reflect the values of Winnipeg West."
As part of the project, the old playground at the back was removed and a new playground was installed next to the existing wading pool, which makes it visible from the street and sidewalk.
There are added features to the new design including an accessible ramped play structure, independent play equipment, swings, picnic tables, and benches.
“This new playground will provide a safe, welcoming space for families to come together and enjoy,” said Logan Oxenham, MLA for Kirkfield Park in a news release. “I’m proud to see our vibrant community growing with yet another beautiful park where children can play, learn, and thrive.”
“Restoring John Steel Park has given this space new life,” said Evan Duncan, Chairperson of the Standing Policy Committee on Property and Development in a news release. “The upgraded playground and amenities will provide families with a safe, accessible, and welcoming place to gather, play, and connect with their community for years to come.”
The project had received approval from the Council through the COVID-19 Economic Response and Recovery Plan, which focuses on enhancing active transportation, improving regional park infrastructure, and adding accessible recreational amenities in underserved areas of the City.
It's budget was $308,100 with $218,000 coming from the Canada Community-Building Fund and $90,100 from the City of Winnipeg’s Parks and Recreation Enhancement Program.
