Central Plains Cancer Services Executive Director Sharilyn Knox says every spot is filled for the upcoming Beyond Cancer Wellness Retreat. Participants will travel from Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta to take part in what she calls the only program of its kind in Western Canada.
She describes the weekend as a chance for women who have experienced cancer to step away from their daily lives and spend time in a safe, supportive space. The retreat will feature facilitators Kim Wiebe, Melanie Gessel, Connie Haw, Shea Fust, Jennifer Kilimnik, and Lynn Bereza. Together, they will lead sessions on art, conversation, movement, mindfulness, and yoga.
“It's about connection, healing, and simply having the time to breathe and be cared for,” notes Knox.
Community support through sponsorship
Although the retreat is now full, Knox points out there are still ways for the community to take part. Through the Prairie Heart sponsorship program, people can help cover costs for participants. She says this small gesture has a powerful impact by reminding women that their community stands with them.
“I think this weekend will be filled with moments of strength, reflection, and joy, and it's thanks to the generosity of so many that it's possible,” says Knox.
Expanding programs and services
Knox adds that the retreat reflects the ongoing growth of Central Plains Cancer Services. She says the organization is grateful for the support that allows it to keep expanding.
“We’re really grateful at Central Plains Cancer Services to keep expanding our services and programs, and this is one amazing way that we’re doing it,” continues Knox.
