This Tuesday, February 22nd at 2:00pm, the Rady JCC’s Music and Mavens Concert and Lecture Series will be offering their first concert of the series. This first concert will present two of Winnipeg’s finest Clarinetists. The Duo “Clarinet Summit” consists of outstanding Orchestral Player, teacher and repairman Naoum Gomom and Myron Schultz who is known for his amazing work with the Winnipeg Klezmer Band Finjan, as well as the group Black Sea Station.

The Duo will be performing both classical and Traditional music from the Klezmer Tradition.

The Clarinet Summit Duo grew out of a relationship that began as a result of clarinetist Naoum Gomon’s artistry as a clarinet repairman. As Schultz states, "Naoum has been working on my clarinets for many years…if you play the clarinet in Winnipeg you pretty well have to know Naoum he’s a bit of a magician.” From this friendship, the two decided to sit down and play duets together, and the rest as say is history; the ”Clarinet Summit Duo" was born.

The duo will be performing music of Mozart, Rossini, as well as music by the well-known clarinet pedagogue Cyrille Rose, and for some extra flair, music from the klezmer tradition.

In regards to the Rose duos, Schultz says, “I’m really tickled about these four duets based on Rose etudes…as duets they are really amazing pieces of music! I think that was the most fun to actually work on.”

For lovers of opera there will also be a delightful suite of music from Rossini’s the Barber of Seville which has been arranged for two clarinets.

Clarinet plays an important role if the Klezmer tradition, and Schultz is truly a master of the Klezmer style of playing, so it seems only fitting that on the program there will be a number of Klezmer tunes that the duo will perform as well.

There is also a certain uniqueness about this concert, as Schultz points out, “You don’t often hear two clarinets together, it’s usually with either piano accompaniment…or I’m used to playing with basses guitars, and violins. It’s bare, I mean it’s two clarinets and that’s it!”

There is really something for everybody on this concert, for the serious classical music lover, there is Mozart, for the opera lover there is Rossini, and for everyone, there is nothing better than the liveliness and spirit of traditional Klezmer music!

The Clarinet Summit concert is this Tuesday, February 22, 2022 at the Rady JCC at 123 Doncaster Street. This is the first concert of the Music ‘N’ Mavens Concert Series. If this concert is anything to go by, the concert series this spring is going to be really something special.
