Contemporary arrangements of ancient carols.
In their first concert of the year, Winnipeg’s Esprit de choeur presents “Medieval and Mod,” an old meets new celebration of the Christmas spirit.
“We’re very excited,” says artistic director Valdine Anderson, noting that the holiday season only adds to the sense of anticipation.
Blending experience with youthful energy, the 23-voice women’s chorus is made up of singers in various decades of life and is known for exploring a vast array of repertoire for upper voices.
“There’s a lot of interesting rep for women’s voices,” says Anderson. “It’s fun to explore that and to be one of the groups that presents this for the first time, often, in Manitoba.”
The concert’s program is bookended by music of 11th Century Benedictine abbess and polymath Hildegard von Bingen, reimagined in a distinctly contemporary style.
Audience members will also be treated to a performance of John Rutter’s beloved choral masterpiece, Dancing Day, paired with other seasonal favourites.
"Medieval and Mod" takes place at Knox United Church (400 Edmonton Street) on Saturday, December 4, beginning at 3 PM.
Tickets are $25.
