For more than 125 years, the Women’s Musical Club of Winnipeg has supported and encouraged young artists in their professional musical pursuits.
On Wednesday, December 28, the organization presents over $11,000 in prize monies awarded to this year’s WMC Scholarship Winners.
Versatile soprano Elena Howard-Scott was named the 2022 top prize winner and will receive the $3,000 WMC Scholarship.
“It’s amazing,” says Howard-Scott when asked about the generosity of the WMC. A now three-time scholarship winner, the young artist notes that the support is immensely appreciated, especially since moving to Toronto to pursue an Artist Diploma at the Glenn Gould School.
“Especially now that I’m away, to have the home support... it’s excellent,” she says.
Deemed "someone to watch" (Ludwig Van Toronto), Howard-Scott is a brave and committed performer, and enjoys performing in a wide variety of styles. As a frequent competitor in the classical scene, competition highlights include receiving the Kurt Weill Foundation Prize in the Lotte Lenya Competition, placing first in the North Dakota/Manitoba District in the Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition, and placing first in the CFMTA National Vocal Competition. Most recently, Howard-Scott was awarded the Grand Prize at the Corcoran Concerto Competition at the Glenn Gould School.
Elena Howard-Scott and the other five WMC Scholarship winners perform on Wednesday, December 28 at the Winnipeg Art Gallery. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m.
