Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI has passed away at the age of 95.

Pope Benedict became Pope in April 2005 following the death of Pope John Paul II. He resigned in 2013.

Before becoming Pope, his given name was Joseph Aloisius Ratzinger. Born on April 16, 1927, in Marktl, Bavaria, Germany, he lived through World War II and in 1951 was ordained as a priest.

He was the oldest Pope ever to be elected in a papal conclave at the age of 78. As Pope, he presided over the beatification of his predecessor Pope John Paul II, as well as canonizing 45 people.

This is a developing story.
