Prepare to be spellbound by the haunting voices of Esprit de choeur.

“Mysticism and Magic” explores hidden truths, mystical spells and the mysteries of love.

The enchanting afternoon concert features the stunning Gabriel Fauré Reqiuem as its centrepiece.

“What’s so special about (the Requiem) – and what was really making it the core for this theme – is Fauré’s take on what that journey from life into what comes next is all about,” says Esprit conductor and artistic director Valdine Anderson.

One of his best-known, large-scale compositions, the Frenchman’s setting of the Mass for the Dead presents a peaceful, calm and serene musical offering rather than one focusing on grief, tragedy and loss.

“(Fauré’s Requiem is) something a little bit more celebrating the mystical, maybe not being quite so scared,” says Anderson, pointing out the repetition of “requiem aeternam” (eternal rest), perhaps indicating that final peace.

Originally calling for mixed choir, Anderson found an arrangement for women’s choir which they will present with organ accompaniment.

Also on the program is the Fauré two-part song Le ruisseau, in addition to works by contemporary American composers Dan Forrest and Libby Larsen, whose Book of Spells also fits neatly into the cauldron of musical selections.

The concert also features guest cellist Bery Filsaime who performs André Previn’s Vocalise alongside soprano Paulina Gonzalez and pianist Rachel Dyck.

"Mysticism and Magic" takes places at Knox United Church, 3 p.m. Saturday, May 6.
