This week, Dry Cold Productions is giving everyone the opportunity to attend The Prom.
Taking place at the Manitoba Theatre for Young People Mainstage, the acclaimed musical makes its Canadian premiere in Winnipeg.
Based on a true story, the blockbuster Broadway show with music by Matthew Sklar and lyrics by Chad Beguelin, tells the story of Emma, a young woman who wants to take her date – who happens to be her girlfriend – to the prom. This causes an uproar in her small, conservative town where the parents would rather cancel the prom entirely than have the young couple attend.
Enter four, down-on-their-luck former Broadway stars who find a cause in Emma’s plight and resolve to help her and her girlfriend make the prom a reality.
Premiered in 2016 in Atlanta, The Prom had its Broadway debut in 2018 and was later adapted into a Netflix movie starring Meryl Streep, James Corden, Nicole Kidman, and Keegan-Michael Key.
Founded in 2001, Dry Cold Productions is a small, boutique musical theatre company who have presented lesser-known works for the first time in Manitoba or Western Canada but rarely have they made a national debut of a musical.
“To do a Canadian premiere of this show has been a huge feather in our cap,” says Dry Cold Productions co-founder Donna Fletcher. “We’re very excited not just because of the storyline and the themes it addresses but just because it’s a show about finding your family and who are your people.”
The Prom runs from May 16 – May 21.
