In need of weekend plans? You’ve come to the right place!
A 126-year-old celebration continues in La Broquerie as they celebrate St. Jean Baptiste Day this weekend.
They will be celebrating with many activities on Saturday and Sunday. We participate in the festivities with Wendy’s Show Us Your Summer at the pancake breakfast from 8 AM to 10 AM.
Claude Moquin, chair of the event committee, is excited to celebrate the weekend.
“The very first one was back in 1897. With a couple of exceptions during the world wars and the COVID days, it's been a tradition which has been liked by La Broquerie area for a long, long time,” Moquin says.
Moquin adds they brought many festivities back last year, but not all. This year, they are “getting almost back to normal.”
"Post-COVID, last year was good, but we still had a few things that were missing, and this year, we've added some of those things that were missing and even added some extra,” he explains. “So this year, as an extra, we will be going to the old folks' home in La Broquerie, the Le Chalet. On Saturday afternoon, we're going to present a couple of local artists to our elderly and to the whole community as well.”
The two-day celebration will be packed with many events, including fireworks, bouncy castles, food trucks, a carnival and more.
On Saturday, they will have a 16-team competitive ball tournament which Moquin says “always draws quite a crowd.” La Broquerie-born artist Daniel Desorcy will also perform at a social evening at the Habs Bar, along with other bands and talents.
On Sunday, they have a mass at 10 AM, which will be followed by a parade.
The St. Jean Baptiste celebrations in La Broquerie will be happening from Saturday, June 24 to Sunday, June 25. For more information, visit ssjb.ca or their Facebook page, Fête de la Saint-Jean Baptiste.
