There's been a rise of mosquitos lately.

Many have noticed a rise in mosquitos lately. Turns out, there's a reason there are so many mosquitos compared to previous years.

The hot and dry start to spring followed by periods of heavy rain in June and July is the perfect recipe for mosquitos, with heavy rainfall activating the mosquito eggs.

In the City of Edmonton, this time last year found about 2,500 mosquitos found in traps across the city. In 2023, this number has spiked to 7,500.

However, this isn't nearly as high as the record numbers in 2001 and 2011, where up to 15,000 mosquitos could be found in a single trap.

Mosquitos, considered one of the deadliest creatures on Earth, can be deterred through bug spray and other methods. Fort Saskatchewan helps ease the mosquito problem through bat houses placed along the city, with a single bat being able to eat 1000 mosquitos in a night.
