A pair of Mexican-born, Winnipeg-based sopranos bring the heat in a celebration of art song.
“Las Dos Catrinas” features Paulina González and Karen Santos, transporting the spirit of Mexico to the heart of the continent in honour of Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead).
Celebrated each year from October 31 to November 2, the holiday is known as a blend of Mesoamerican ritual, European religion and Spanish culture, explains Santos.
“(On Día de los Muertos) it’s believed that the veil between the dead and the living is lifted,” she says. “We gather in cemeteries, we make offerings – “ofrendas” – we set up an altar and spend the night partying... with Mexicans it’s always a party.”
Having met at the Desautels Faculty of Music at the University of Manitoba, this concert marks the duo's first performance together – aside from their studies.
“We’ve always wanted to do something together in Spanish, but we were so busy with school that it never happened,” says González.
Joined by pianist Megan Dufrat, the concert also features the ensemble Trio Los Laureles, as well as a traditional Mexican altar created by Victor Ramirez, adorning the Westworth United Church.
