Province update on gathering restrictions, tests, and boosters

The provincial government has a gift for Albertans this holiday season.

With COVID-19 case numbers low in the province, some changes have been made to gathering restrictions. The maximum indoor gathering limit remains at 10 adults, however, the government said this can now involve more than two households. Albertans under 18 years of age do not count toward the limit.

This is in effect immediately and will affect everyone, regardless of vaccination status.

COVID-19: More than 5% of Manitoba's population tested positive throughout pandemic

As Manitoba reaches more than 70,000 total COVID-19 cases, they also reach another milestone: one out of every 20 people in the province has contracted COVID-19.

Out of Manitoba's estimated 1,380,648 person population, 5.08 per cent of people have contracted COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic. There have been 70,140 confirmed cases since March 12's first case.

The Province of Manitoba says COVID-19 reinfections are extremely rare in the prairie province. There have been less than one dozen instances of Manitobans being reinfected with COVID-19.

December 15: COVID-19 update

The Northwestern Health Unit is reporting ten new COVID-19 cases have been discovered in the region. 

Of the new cases, six were found in the District of Rainy River, three in the Kenora region, and one in the Dryden/Red Lake region. 

Follow up with the persons involved and their contacts has started according to protocol. Anyone who is identified as a contact for these cases will be contacted directly.

Currently, the region has 36 active cases connected to the NWHU catchment area. 

Twenty more cases of Omicron variant reported in Alberta on Tuesday

The province reported 20 cases of the Omicron variant on Tuesday, December 14 bringing the total to 50.

Overall, there were 250 new cases with a positivity rate of 3.9 per cent. 

There are 366 people in the hospital with 70 patients in ICU. 

Sadly, another eight deaths have been reported bringing the total to 3,283.

Cochrane dropped to 34 active COVID-19 cases and Rocky View County has 50 cases.

Glenbow, St.Timothy, and Westbrook schools are all on alert status with 2-4 cases. 

Update: Province To Announce Changes To COVID-19 Restrictions

A big announcement has been cancelled.

The province was expected to relax COVID-19 restrictions Tuesday (Dec.14) afternoon, allowing more people to gather for the holidays.

"Dec.14, the State of Public Health Emergency will lapse. That's why we think it's the right time for us potentially to move forward," explained Premier Jason Kenney during a recent press conference.

COVID-19 restrictions update for today has been postponed

Premier Kenney hinted on Friday that today's COVID-19 update would see a change to some of the province's health protocols. 

Today was the date that the state of emergency measures are set to expire. 

Whether a good sign or bad, the update has been postponed.

Those who were supposed to be in attendance today were Premier Kenney, Health Minister Jason Copping, and Chief Medical Officer Dr. Deena Hinshaw. 

An alternative date has not been released.

Manitoba's total case count reaches more than 70,000

As of Tuesday morning, there are have been more than 70,000 confirmed COVID-19 cases in Manitoba.

There are 164 new COVID-19 cases in Manitoba, bringing the total number of cases to 70,140.

Out of Tuesday's new cases, 61 people are not vaccinated, 15 people are partially vaccinated, and 88 people are fully vaccinated.

New cases by health region include:

  • 76 in Winnipeg
  • 36 in Southern
  • 28 in Northern
  • 17 in Prairie Mountain
  • 10 in Interlake-Eastern
