New operator needed for Sioux Lookout’s shelter
The Sioux Lookout community will need to find a new operator for their emergency shelter in the coming months.
The Kenora District Services Board and the Board of Directors for Sioux Lookout’s Out of the Cold Shelter have announced that OOTC volunteers will be transitioning away from operating the shelter as of September 1.
“The Kenora District Services Board wants to acknowledge the hard work, compassion, and dedication of the Out of the Cold Shelter Board of Directors,” says Barry Baltessen, Board Chair of the KDSB.
Red Lake youth in custody following threats against local school
One Red Lake youth has been arrested after threats of violence were made.
The Red Lake/Ear Falls Detachment of the OPP received information of threats of violence made against the school by a student.
Following an investigation, a 17-year-old youth was arrested and charged on May 27, with:

National handgun freeze key feature of federal Liberals' new firearm-control bill
A national freeze on importing, buying, selling or otherwise transferring handguns is a central feature of firearm-control legislation tabled Monday by the federal Liberals.
The measure does not ban handguns outright, allowing current owners to continue to possess and use them, but seeks to cap the number already in Canada.
"This is a concrete and real national measure that will go a long way towards keeping Canadians safe," Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told a news conference in Ottawa.

Severe thunderstorm watch and rainfall warning issued
A severe thunderstorm watch and rainfall warning have been issued for the region.
Environment Canada says conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail, and heavy rain.
A line of dangerous thunderstorms is forecast to move into Ontario early this evening, persist through the evening hours and weaken overnight. The main threats are damaging wind gusts up to 110 km/h, dime to ping pong ball sized hail, and heavy downpours.
Back-to-back storms could bring 80-90mm of rain
A Special Weather Statement remains in effect in northwestern Ontario, which is still calling for a significant amount of rainfall this week.
Environment Canada’s statement says we could see up to 50 mm of rain today and tonight, with another storm set to move in from Minnesota by tonight or tomorrow morning. They say the second storm could bring an additional 40 mm.
