Jordan Searle is a paramedic with Ornge Air Ambulance in Kenora. After seeing the war in Ukraine begin through the lens of social media, Searle decided he could do more. He gathered a group of his military friends and together, they travelled to Ukraine to provide medical aid to the victims of the war. 

Fort Frances traffic stop leads to seizure of meth and fentanyl

After a two-day investigation, one Fort Frances woman faces numerous charges.  

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Rainy River Detachment along with OPP North West Region Emergency Response Team and Treaty Three Police Service conducted a drug investigation from May 22 to May 23, 2022, within the Rainy River District. 

Loss of Black Sturgeon cabin leaves Manitoba family 'heartbroken'

“The cabin’s flooded, and then seeing the pictures it’s just so heartbreaking, cause you know everything you have is destroyed."

That was the reaction Manitoba resident Lisa Downton had after seeing her family's Black Sturgeon cabin completely destroyed and unliveable, from the high water levels on the lake.

Downton and her family are grain farmers from the Iles des Chenes and Lorette area, south of Winnipeg, and bought their cabin last spring, as a family getaway from their busy work lives.

Scholarships offered to students to attend skills program in UCLA

Students in Northwestern Ontario are encouraged to apply for one of 15 scholarships offered for LEAP Week 2022 in Los Angeles, California. 

Leap Week is a week-long, in-person life skills development program at UCLA, which equips students with the knowledge, life skills, and confidence to achieve higher personal, academic, and professional goals!

Road and highway update - May 26

As of 6:00am Thursday, May 26:

Hwy 105 - Red Lake, at Dixie Lake Rd. lanes are alternating for barrier work. Traffic control is in place.

Hwy 105 - Vermilion Bay, Closed at Buller Creek due to water over the road.

Sioux Lookout, the Ed Ariano By-Pass is closed from First Ave. to Hwy 642 Jct due to water over the road and related damage. Barricades in place with a detour available to Passenger Vehicles ONLY, using Wellington, Front, 3rd, King, Alcona to connect to Hwys 516 and 642. Non-essential Commercial Vehicles can use Hwy 599

Birch Avenue roadway, walkway closed today

The City of Dryden is warning drivers about the closure on Birch Avenue today.

City crews say Birch Avenue, north of Davis Street, will be closed to vehicular traffic until 4 p.m. today, but local traffic will be permitted. As well, the walkway between Birch Avenue and Victoria Street will also be closed off to pedestrians, as crews complete repairs to the hydrant.

Public Works apologizes for the inconvenience and would like to thank the public for their cooperation. Anyone with questions or concerns is asked to contact Public Works at 807-223-2367.

Sports Update May 26

A busy night for slo-pitch in Kenora last night. On the men's side, Beauty Bay took down Titan Contractors 25-9, Centuries topped the Mariners 29-6 and Neechie's won 25-17 over the Legends. On the women's side, it was a close game, but CUPE won 17-15 over the Clippers. DJ Services destroyed Jarnel 37-5, and the Neniska Crushers squeaked by KTown Kafe 21-20. 

School bus delays and cancellations - Thursday, May 26

Flooding across the region and the driver shortage is continuing to impact school bus routes.

The following routes have cancelled stops or delays on Thursday, May 26.

Kenora

  • KN13, KN15, & KN88 – all stops north of the Kenora By-pass (Hwy. 17A) will be cancelled due to road closures.

Red Lake

  • RL6 – stops on Dupont Drive and Young Street east of Chelsea Street will be cancelled due to conditions on Young Street.
