Dryden District flood warning extended
The flood warning that was issued for the Dryden District by the Ministry of Northern Development, Mines, Natural Resources and Forestry has been extended.
The warning, which was set to expire today, has been extended to Friday, May 27.
Sioux Lookout responding to high water levels
Like most areas in northwestern Ontario, Sioux Lookout is dealing with severely high water levels, and now the municipality is taking action to protect its residents and property from flooding.
The Municipality's Manager of Public Works and Infrastructure, Jeff Hawley says in a prepared release they are advising residents to avoid the pedestrian bridge at the Travel Information Centre as both ends are blocked off.
Public Works Operations Manager, Mat Lelonde notes they are working with residents that are impacted by flooding in low-lying areas.
May 20 Sports update
The Battle of Alberta resumes tonight as the Calgary Flames are hosting the Edmonton Oilers for Game 2 of their second-round tilt at the Scotiabank Saddledome. Game 1 was a wild affair with the two teams combining for 15 goals as the Flames won 9-6.
In the other game in the Stanley Cup Playoffs tonight, the Carolina Hurricanes will be looking to remain unbeaten at home during the post-season as they welcome the New York Rangers for Game 2 of their series. The Canes took Game 1 in overtime 2-1.
Prince Charles and Camilla wrap Canadian tour but calls for reconciliation continue
A whirlwind visit by Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, has ended but the calls for meaningful reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples have not.
The couple departed Canada Thursday night after a three-day tour that began in St. John's, N.L., with a solemn moment of reflection on residential school deaths and ended in the North with a meeting with First Nations chiefs on climate change.
Charles told people in Yellowknife that he was deeply moved by conversations with survivors who courageously shared their experiences of the schools.
Rain, rain, go away: 20-40 mm expected as rainfall warning issued
Yet another rainfall warning has been issued for the region as a storm system draws near.
Environment Canada says between 20 - 40 mm of rain could fall between Thursday evening (May 19) and Friday overnight (May 20).
Temperatures are expected to drop into the low single digits on Friday. As a result, the rain may become mixed with wet snow at times. However, most of the snow should melt on contact and no snowfall accumulations are anticipated.
Grassy Narrows, Wabaseemoong declare State of Emergency
Two First Nation communities in the area have declared a State of Emergency with the severe flooding seen throughout the region, as well as a number of communities in the Fort Frances area.
Leadership of Grassy Narrows First Nation and Wabaseemoong Independent Nation both issued State of Emergency notices earlier this week, which lets communities access provincial assistance with their flooding situations.
How much rain fell? Possible snow on the way
The rain came fast and furious on Wednesday (May 18, 2022), adding to the over 100 millimetres the area has received this month.
“17 mm of rain at the Kenora Airport yesterday, so it’s a good rainfall, it wasn’t actually that much I imagine some areas got more,” says Peter Kimbell, Environment Canada Meteorologist.
To date, 107.6 mm of rain has fallen in Kenora this month. This is well above the average for May of 80.8 mm.
The skies were also filled with spurts of lightning and rattling thunderstorms throughout the day as well.
$190,000 of drugs taken off the street in Dryden
Drugs with an estimated street value of approximately $190,000 were among a number of items seized by Dryden OPP following the execution of a search warrant in Dryden.
Police say on Tuesday, May 17, members of the Dryden Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), the Community Street Crime Unit (CSCU), the Organized Crime Enforcement Bureau (OCEB) with assistance from Treaty 3 Police Service (T3PS) and Nishnawbe Aski Police Service (NAPS) executed a search warrant at a Pitt Avenue residence in the City of Dryden.
18-year-old charged for driving without license, insurance or plates
Drivers are reminded that you need to get a few things in order before you can get behind the wheel, and you probably shouldn’t run from the police.
The Dryden OPP charged an 18-year-old driver with a number of offences after a failed traffic stop and short pursuit on May 6, where the driver failed to stop for police and continued to operate the vehicle in a dangerous manner.
Police disengaged with the pursuit in the interest of public safety, but after an investigation into the incident, 18-year-old Bryce Robinson of Dryden has been arrested and charged with:
May 19 Sports Update
The Toronto Blue Jays have the day off today as they prepare for a three-game interleague series with the Cincinnati Reds tomorrow. Jays pitcher Hyun Jin Ryu is expected to get the start.
The second strike in CFL history is over. The league confirmed Wednesday night that it and the C-F-L Players' Association reached a tentative collective bargaining agreement. The contract must still be ratified by both the CFL board of governors as well as the players association membership but the expectation is players will report to their teams today.
