Prince Charles nods to 'darker' past, need for reconciliation as Canadian tour begins

Prince Charles and Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, began a three-day Canadian tour Tuesday in St. John’s, N.L., where the prince shared his views on reconciliation with Indigenous people before the couple took part in an emotional healing ceremony.

In a speech delivered in the foyer of the provincial legislature, the prince said the land that became Canada has been cared for by Indigenous people — First Nations, Métis and Inuit — for thousands of years.

Possibility of water levels dropping soon ‘unlikely’, says Control Board

The Lake of the Woods Control Board says water coming into Lake of the Woods remains more than double the maximum amount of water they’re able to release through fully opened dams in the Kenora area.

In a new update, the board says levels on Namakan Lake and Rainy Lake are around their 2014 peaks and may exceed all-time records, and levels in the Lac Seul area have risen by over 26”.

Up to 40 mm of rain possible in this weeks forecast

Environment Canada is saying residents should enjoy the sunshine while it lasts on Tuesday (May 17, 2022), as they are predicting more rain and cloudy conditions for the rest of the week.

Meteorologist Gerald Cheng is saying that an unsettled pattern of weather is making its way to the region starting Tuesday night (May 17, 2022).

Flood warning in effect for Red Lake area

The Ministry of Northern Development, Mines, Natural Resources and Forestry has upgraded its flood watch for the Red Lake district to a flood warning. It will stay in effect until May 23 at the earliest.

Residents across the Red Lake area, including those near Dixie Lake, Suffel Lake, Longlegged Lake, Pakwash Lake, the Chukuni River, Coli Lake and the Berens Lake watersheds are asked to use extreme caution on roadways and bridges with the high water levels in the region and more rain on the way.

Whiteshell and Lake of the Woods continue to rise

Water levels on Lake of the Woods and in the Whiteshell continue to rise as a result of continuous rainfall and snowmelt.

A spokesperson with the Whiteshell Cottagers Association says between May 8th and May 12th, the water rose by three to nine inches on the Whiteshell and Falcon River systems and by 18 to 22 inches on the Winnipeg River System.

The association has been sent photos and comments about flooded shoreline structures flooded access roads and damage caused by the wind driving ice into docks and boathouses.

May 17 Sports Update

St. Thomas Aquinas High School hosted over 100 athletes from the region for the Grade 7 and 8 All Catholic Badminton Championships this week, with students from Kenora, Dryden and Sioux Lookout. The teams of Quentin Thompson and Cade Peters, Maddyn Hughes and Addison Spak, and Jordyn Moen and Jacob Silver all won gold.

Janine Seymour co-hosts the Q Morning Show

Kim Leduc is away on vacation this week and it was the perfect opportunity to invite different co-hosts to join me everyday this week.

Today's guest was Janine Seymour, who with very little sleep from attending a full moon fire ceremony, wrapped up her day with a visit.

It was a pleasure to have Janine join us today and I was a little surprised to find out with "10 Questions" what she would make for dinner, if I was coming over.  "Popcorn," was her response. 

Road and highway update - May 17

As of 8:45 am Monday, May 17:

East Melick Road closed at Essex Road.

East Melick Road is closed 600m north of the Portier bridge. 

Gordon Lake Road, west of McIntosh Road closed due to the increased flow of water through the Forest Lake dam.

Highway 599 from Highway 516 is closed due to flooding from Pintail Rd to Pickle Lake. 

Boat launches, docks closed in Dryden with extreme water levels

Municipal staff in Dryden are continuing to respond to the extremely high water levels in the community.

The City of Dryden says the sidewalk from Highway 594 to King Street has been closed, as well as the sidewalk in the Swanson Creek area and the river walkway from the Victoria Street docks to the Duke Street docks, due to the rising water levels.

Prince Charles and Camilla kick off three-day Canadian tour in St. John's today

Prince Charles and his wife, Camilla, are in Newfoundland and Labrador's capital today to begin a three-day Canadian tour focused on Indigenous reconciliation and climate change. 

The royal couple will visit the provincial legislature where they will be welcomed by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau before heading to Government House, which is the official residence of Lt.-Gov. Judy Foote, the Queen's representative in the province.
